Hunter was baptised on 29 January 1860 in St. Pauls, Jarrow, County Durham. He was born earlier in the month.

In 1881 he was an assistant to his brother James who ran a business as a washing contractor for the army. His sister Frances Elizabeth, her husband John Newton and three of their children lived with them, together with two servants.

In early 1890 he married Mary Ann Higgins, witness were, Isaac Nicholas Humprey and Ann Potts, Hunter was then living at 91 Croft Terrace, in 1891 they were living at 50, Grange Road West, Jarrow, County Durham with a son, James H. who was eight months old. Hunter was an iron driller, this was probably underground drilling at a coal mine.

By 1901 the family had moved to live at 3, Kingsley Terrace, Elswick, Newcastle, after spending some time in Gateshead. They now had four sons and Hunter was now working as a vanman.

He was still a vanman, working for a furnishing removers, in the 1911 census, now living at 11 Oaks Place Newcastle on Tyne, with two more sons. All six children born to Hunter and Mary were still living.
