Hunter was baptised on 29 January 1860 in St. Pauls, Jarrow, County Durham. He was born earlier in the month.
In 1881 he was an assistant to his brother James who ran a business as a washing contractor for the army. His sister Frances Elizabeth, her husband John Newton and three of their children lived with them, together with two servants.

Hunter was an iron driller, this was probably underground drilling at a coal mine.
