James Alexander was born at the end of 1855, and baptised 21 May 1856 at St. Pauls Jarrow to Christina & James an agriculture labourer of Hedworth. A copy of the baptism is available at Tyne & Wear archives Newcastle.

James was an Army Washing Contractor in 1881, with his younger brother Hunter as assistant. Also living with him at his home in Hedworth was his sister Frances and her husband John Newton with three of their children, their oldest daughter was living with her grandparents at Hills Farm, South Shields. There were also two domestic servants.

He married about 1888, according to the 1911 census but it was 14 November 1887 when he married Isabella Duff at South Shields, St. Mary.( S. Shields 10a 976)

In 1901 he was living at 64, Rose Street, Hebburn with his wife Isabella, four sons and two daughters. Also with them is 29 year old Robert L. Lazenby, who is listed as son. This seems to be an error as James was only 14 and his wife 10 when Robert was born, he may be an adopted son. James is working as a Cemetery Labourer and Robert is a Cemetery Gardner.
