Of all the variations, the ones most commonly used today, in descending order, are Calkins, Caulkins, Calkin, and Corkins. In this genealogy, all descendants of the progenitor couple have been given the surname "Calkins". This is highly inaccurate and misleading, and can be jusified, if at all, only in two ways. Firstly, in many cases, such as with Capt. Jonathan Calkins, the name is given so many ways in so many different documents, that it is very difficult to determine the spelling that Jonathan himself used. Secondly, when conducting and recording genealogy by computer, as this was done, the use of a single spelling, instead of a large number of them, greatly simplifies searches and putting individuals into the proper family group.
