[above from the ALPENA NEWS, Sat., Dec. 20, 1969.] "Howard had to drop out of Tawas High School because of kidney infection (lost one kidney) and never returned to school. However, he was talented and ambitious. After we moved to Alpena in Aug 1913, he worked as a machinist for Besser Mfg. Co., who made machines for fabricating concrete masonry units. He took correspondence courses in commercial art, cartooning, engineering drawing, played steel guitar and ukelele. In World War I he tried to enlist in the army and navy but was rejected. He finally was drafted and stationed at Camp Custer in Battle Creek, MI until the end of the war. The "big money" in auto plants was enticing and he went to Flint, MI (Buick) and then to Detroit for Packard, then returned to Besser in Alpena. Later he and a friend drove his 1920 Chev touring car to Richmond, CA where he worked for Chevrolet. He drove to Toledo, OR and visited Roscoe, Mabel, Harry, and Vernon. Returned to Alpena and went back with Besser where he eventually became Administrative Engineer. He married Ida Kennedy and not have any children. He died Dec. 12, 1969 of a hear attack incurred while shovelling snow. [from a letter from Clayton L. Davis, 8 Heritage Drive, Avon, CT 06001, 23 Jan 1988].
