OBITUARY: Clayton M. Davis, well known Alpena resident, died suddenly this morning at his home at 622 Washington. He had been in failing health, suffering from a heart condition, but his death was sudden. Born Apr 6, 1870 in Ravenswood, WV, Mr. Davis came to Alpena in 1913 as a milling engineer for the Thunder Bay Milling Co. In 1920 he entered business for himself, opening the Alpena Flour Mill on Campbell St. Ill health forced his retirement in 1945 and the business was continued by his son-in-law, William L. Hagen. He married the former Isabel Johnson in Tawas City on Apr 23, 1895. Mr. Davis was a member of the First Methodist Church. Mr. Davis is survived by his wife; three sons, Howard M. and George D., Alpena, and Clayton L., Larchmont, NY; a daughter, Mrs. Hagen, Alpena; nine grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. S. L. Davis of Marion, OH. The body is at the Wachteruser funeral home where services will be held Friday at 2:30. The Rev. James Lee will officiate. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

MARRIAGE: Iosco Co., MI Marriage Records, Book 3, page 74, film SLC 0963406: He is listed as a miller, has not been previously married, and resides in Tawas City. [Data from letter from Clayton Davis dated 23 Jan 1988.]: "Probably born on a farm because he would tell about picking tobacco. He was born in Ravenswood, WV. They later were in Marion, OH. My father (Clayton Milton Davis) learned to be miller in Urbana, OH. He then went on to Tawas City, MI to operate a flour mill and married Isabel Frances Johnson in 1896. They moved to Marion, OH where the first children, twin boys, were born and they died in Marion. My oldest brother, Howard Mason, was also born Jan 18, 1897 in Marion, OH. Next, he moved to Whittemore, MI where George D. was born Nov 2, 1900. Next, to Posen, MI where Margaret Lillian was born Jan 29, 1902. My father operated a flour mill and grain elevater in Posen. Next, to Alabaster, MI where I was born May 4, 1904 and my father worked for U S Gypsum Co. as a miller operating mill stones in grinding plaster. Next, to a small farm 3 miles north of Alabaster in 1907. I recall very vividly standing near the barn in 1910 and seeing Halley's Comet. Next, Tawas City, MI, 3 miles north of the farm where my father operated a mill and elevator. Next, Alpena, MI, 67 miles north of Tawas City where my father operated a flour mill. He later bought a flour mill in Alpena until he retired. He passed away Feb 14, 1951 at 6:00 AM from a heart attack." Children not listed in proper order.
