During World War I, George served in the U S Coast Guard which was part of the Navy at that time. He was on a sea-going large rescue tug based at Woods Hole, Mass. and they covered the Atlantic coast as far up as Halifax. After the war he did not finish high school but attended Ferris Institute, worked in Detroit, MI auto plant and came back to Alpena to work in the laboratory of Huron Portland Cement Co., which was one of the largest cement plants in the US. He sailed on Great Lakes freighters and later went to work for Besser in Alpena and then for my father in the flour mill. George was an outdoor person who loved the woods and water. He had sailboats and became very proficent at handling them."
