Lyle worked for a time at Oldsmobile in Lansing MI via his Uncle Frank. Lyle's Uncle Frank gave him his trade tools, which he gave to his son James. Lyle's Dad Earl died young and his Mom remarried a Shavey

    TRAVERSE CITY - Lyle H. Helfrich, 84, of Traverse City, died Tuesday at Bortz Health Care of Traverse City.
    Born Oct. 9, 1914, in Old Mission, he was the son of Earl and Mable (Penharlow) Helfrich. He married Dorothy L. Fay on April 27, 1935, in Lansing.
    He was formerly a resident of Lansing, where he worked as a steam welder for Oldsmobile, and developed a background in plumbing and welding. For a number of years he owned and operated Lyle Helfrich and Son Excavating in Traverse City. He wintered in Okeechobee, Fla., for the past 18 years, and enjoyed fishing, boating and travel.
    Survivors include his wife, Dorothy L. Helfrich of Traverse City; two sons, James L. (Karen) Helfrich of Lansing and Richard R. (Linda) Helfrich of Traverse City; one sister, Helen Lovendusky of Beulah; one brother, John Helfrich of Lansing; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by one sister, Bessie Andrus.
    Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, with the Rev. Dean I. Bailey officiating. Friends may call from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in the spring in Ogdensburg Cemetery on Old Mission Peninsula.
