Latta of Philadelphia PA, on 7 Oct 1880 (JMSeaver) BIOGRAPHY: Educated in private schools of Brooklyn NY and Orange NJ. At age of 16 was a clerk with East Indies Importing House. At 30 a member merchant in teas and Japanese goods and continued in this business for 25 years. In 1871-3 he travelled through Europe, India, China, and Japan. Secretary of the Citizens Union for one year; newspaper work 1 yr. Extended house numbering system of Greater New York, 2 yrs. Service in the Park Dept 10 years. Farming at Englishtown NY 10 yrs. For many years Mr Seaver has been greatly interested in the genealogy of the Seaver families, and has favored publication of a Genealogy, to include the data published by Trask and to cover the period since 1872. He has contributed considerable material to the THE SEAVER GENEALOGY which he secured by research, correspondence and personal interviews. (JMSeaver, 1923) CENSUS: In the 1900 US census, the Henry G. Seaver family resided at 215 Winthrop St in Brooklyn, Kings County, NY. The family included Henry G. (age 53, born Dec 1846 in NY), wife Cornelia L. (age 45, born Jun 1855 in PA), daughter Emma L. (age 18, born Aug 1881 in NY), daughter Laura J. (age 16, born Feb 1884 in NY) and son Henry B. (age 12, born Mar 1888 in NY). The complete census entry can be found in Vol. 99, ED 543, sheet 5, line 21 of the New York 1900 census (NY 1900 census soundex in LDS Microfilm 1,246,854). In the 1910 US Census, this family resided at 473 East 18th Street in the 29th Ward of Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. The family included head Henry G. Seaver (male, white, age 64, first marriage, married 29 years, born NY, father born MA, mother born NY, a foreman, works in city park department, owns a ohuse free of mortgage), wife Cornelia L. Seaver (female, white, age 55, first marriage, married 29 years, 3 children born, 3 living, born PA, father born DE, mother born PA), daughter Laura J. Seaver (female, white, age 26, single, born NY, father born NY, mother born PA), and son Henry B. Seaver (male, white, age 22, single, born NY, father born NY, mother born PA) [National Archives Microfilm Series T624, Roll 983, page 257, ED 1014, Sheet 8B, Line 83]. In the 1920 US Census, Henry Seaver (head, male, white, age 74, married, born NY, father born MA, mother born NY, a farmer, works on general farm, owns home free of mortgage) and his wife Cornelia Seaver (female, white, age 65, married, born PA, parents born PA) resided at 473 East 18th Street in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York [National Archives Microfilm Series T625, Roll 1178, page 267, ED 1347, Sheet 4A, Line 26]. DEATH RECORD: An Obituary was published in the New York Times newspaper, dated 18 October 1931. It reads: “HENRY GARDNER SEAVER. Early Leader in Citizen's Union Brooklyn, Dies on his 86th Birthday "Henry Gardner Seaver of Westfield, N.J., a descendant of the Robert Seaver who settled in Roxbury, Mass., in 1634, died Friday on his eighty-sixth birthday in Yonkers, N.Y. Services will be held in Yonkers at 2:30 P.M. today at the house of his daughter, Mrs. Edric B. Smith, 35 Windsor Terrace. "Mr. Seaver was a son of Benjamin Francis Seaver, one of New York's early textile manufacturers, and a grandson of Benjamin Seaver, twice mayor of Boston. He was one of the early leaders of the Citizen's Union in Brooklyn, and had been an ardent advocate of the single tax. Since he retired from business about twenty years ago, he had devoted himself largely to genealogical research. He belonged to the Sons of the American Revolution.” |
