Military

21 Aug 1862 to 22 June 1865 Civil War, for the Union, Corporal, Company I, 115th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Enlisted 21 Aug 1862, and Mustered In 19 Sep 1862 at Camp Massillon, Ohio, USA. Mustered Out 22 June 1865 Murfreesboro, Tennessee, USA.S4

"He enlisted in 1862 in Co I, 115th Regt. O.V.I. and took part with that company as noted in sketch of Ephraim Powell, with whom he soldiered.”S3

Henry was promoted to Full Corporal on 17 Oct 1862, just one month after the company mustered in. His rank was also Corporal upon discharge.S4 During the War, some units elected their officers, while others were promoted based on their service. There is no proof yet of which type of promotion Henry earned. Obviously, Henry had leadership qualities, and further developed those skills during three years directing the men of his squad. Yet, after the War, he appears to have been a private person, rather than involved in community leadership.

Henry’s name is listed on the memorial at Grand Meadow Cemetery, “In Memory of Those Who Have Served Their Country.” He is listed with 3 other Civil War Veterans, and many others who served in other wars.S1

Henry survived without injury, but lost friends, neighbors, and relatives. Like many soldiers, he left his bride (of 11 months) and (2 month old) son at home. His choice to enlist and serve shows how important he believed the War was. He surely worried about his wife and son at home, especially when the Confederate units were in Ohio. In the month between Henry’s enlistment and mustering in, the first organized CSA unit came into the state near Buffington Island. It was September 1862 when Jenkins's cavalry raided northern Kentucky and West Virginia, and passed through Ohio. News of this raid must have made the War feel much closer to home.
