HENRY was born in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania and representative of Scotch parentage according to his daughter's (Lucy Ann Parsons) obituary. It also said his wife (Elizabeth Beard) was born in Philadelphia and was of a Pennsylvania-Dutch (Deutsch or German) family. This is the only record we have found which names Henry and Elizabeth's origins.

HENRY MCMILLEN married ELIZABETH BEARD on 31 October 1820. (Columbiana Co., Ohio marriages, LDS records batch #7725514.) The only document available from Columbiana County is a handwritten index which shows the exact spelling of their names as listed above and "James Vale" as Justice of the Peace and "Horace Potter", Clerk. No parents are listed.

Henry's last name is spelled many different ways on records. According to the 1870 census, he could not read or write. This is also true for his sons Andrew, Michael, James, and John. There is no Henry McMillin found in 1820 census records in Columbiana County, Ohio, although other McMillin's are found.

1830 US Census, Middleton Twnshp, Columbiana Co, OHIO: Henry "McMullin" age 30-39, living with: (2) males under 5, (1) male 5 to 9, (1) male 10-14, (2) females Age 5 to 9. Female (wife?) age 30-39, two elderly people (parents?) one male age 90-99 and one female age 80-89.

The 1830 census record fits with this family except for one male age 10-14. Also, two males under age 5 could mean that Andrew was born in1830. Since Jacob Beard willed his house and barn to Elizabeth and Henry, it is most likely Jacob and his wife are the two elderly people on this 1830 census. The male age 10-14 could be one of Elizabeth's younger brothers.

August, 1831, Will of Jacob Abraham Beard divided 60 acres in Steubenville Township, Columbiana County, into six equal parts, ten acres "whereon the Dwelling house and Barn stand unto my beloved daughter Elizabeth McMillin and Henry McMillin her husband" ...<see document>

<< DEED >> Henry McMillin to Gustavus Hoff (April 21, 1836) To all whom these presents shall come Henry McMillin and Elizabeth his wife of Middleton Township, Columbiana County and State of Ohio send Greeting. Whereas by patent bearing date of the tenth day of August 1813 the President of the United States granted and confirmed the South West quarter of Section twenty-six of Township number seven in the first range of the Steubenville district unto a certain Henry Beard his heirs and assigns forever. And whereas by deed bearing date the thirteenth day of May 1815 the said Henry Beard and Winifred his wife consigned and confirmed eighty-three acres of the East part of said quarter section unto a certain Jacob Abraham Beard his heirs and assigns forever. And whereas by will bearing date in the year 1825 the said Jacob Abraham Beard directed his executors therein named after the decease of his wife to divide sixty acres of the land as conveyed to him as aforesaid into equal parts always beginning in East line of said quarter section and running a West course to John Beard’s line.... <see document>

Other records found for Henry Beard show his date born as 1787 and Winifred, his wife, born 1792. This couple moved to Gallia County, Ohio where Henry and Elizabeth also moved. It appears that Henry may have been Jacob Abraham Beard's brother as he was too young to be his father. Jacob Beard's first child was born about 1790.

1840 US Census, Middleton Twnshp, Columbiana Co, OHIO: Henry "McMillen" age 40-49 living with male children: one under 5 (Franklin), two ages 5 to 9 (John and Michael), two ages 10-14 (Andrew,James), and one age 15-19 (Henry Jr.) Three female children: one under age 5 (Barbara) and two 15-19 (Lucy, Eva), female age 40-49 (Elizabeth.) (NOTE: Living nearby are Henry Beard, Jacob Beard, Benjamin Beard, William Beard, probably the brothers of Elizabeth.)

Columbiana County, Ohio - Deed dated June 2, 1845 - Henry McMillin toGeorge Bard: For the sum of three dollars, Henry McMillin and wife Elizabeth McMillin sold and quit claimed to George Bard undivided lots in Middleton township, being a part of the south west qtr. of section no. twenty-six Township No. eleven range no. first...etc. (NOTE: This is probably when Henry and Elizabeth moved from Columbiana County to Gallia County.)

1850 US Census, Huntington Township, Gallia Co, OHIO: Henry "McMillon" age 51, farmer born in PA. Wife Elizabeth age 46, born in PA, Children: Henry age 25, James age 22, Jackson age 20, Michael age18, John age 16, Barbary age 15, Franklin age 12, all born in Ohio. The next household is John Peters family with Eliza Peters, age 20, later to marry James McMillin and her brother Alexander Peters, age 18, later to marry Eliza Parsons. (NOTE: 1850 census was the first census to list all occupants of the household.)

1860 US Census, Clayton Twnshp, Crawford Co, WISC: Henry McMillin, Age 58, farmer born PA, living alone next to daughter Eva Copus & husband John Copus, and their children.

1870 Census, Clayton Twnshp, Crawford Co, WISC: Henry McMillen, Age 70, farmer born in PA, living with Ruth (Adney) Age 62, born in Ohio. (Next door is Ephraim J. Martin, age 65, and his family.)

Henry "McMullen" married Ruth Adney on 14 Dec 1874 in Clayton, CrawfordCo, Wisc. (Vol 6, Pg 43) V2-0823: On the marriage certificate, his father's name is handwritten JOSEPH MCMULLEN (or McMullin). Witnesses are H. C. Morgan and E. A. McMullin. However, a later Marriage Registration record from the same county dated July 11, 1875 lists his father as JOHN MCMULLIN.

NOVEMBER 26, 1875: County Clerk for Crawford County filed judgment against Henry McMillin for non-payment of taxes for the following land: The South East quarter of the South West quarter of Section No. one (1),Town ten (10), Range No. three (3) west. (It appears that Henry somehow re-obtained this deed from the county, as he signed a quit claim deed in 1881 for the same.)

Henry's father's birthplace is blank. This is the first time we have seen "Scotland" for his mother's birthplace. Ruth's parents shown born in NY is probable error. According to Higley records, her father Elam Higley was born 1780 in Simsbury, CT and mother Jane McMillin born about 1787 in OH or VA.

QUIT CLAIM DEED: Henry McMillin to Verona Fish, 19th day of January 1881. Henry McMillin and Ruth his wife, Grantors of Crawford Co., Wisconsin, hereby quit claims to Verona Fish of the same place for the sum of One hundred and seventy five dollars the following tract of land in CrawfordCounty to Wit: South East quarter of the South West quarter of SectionNo. one (1), Town ten (10), Range No. three.

My assumption is that Henry died sometime in February, 1886 and Verona Fish then registered this quit claim deed. This may have been when Ruth moved to Iowa: According to Adney family records, Ruth Adney lived the last ten years of her life in Iowa with her daughter, Esther St. John. She died on 23 Dec 1894 and is buried in Giard Cemetery, Iowa under the name Ruth Higley Adney. (NOTE: State of Iowa has no death record.) From this we might assume that, ignoring her second marriage, the Adney relatives buried her with her first husband's name. Her first husband, William Adney, died in 1875 and is buried in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Henry McMillin is not buried in Giard cemetery and we can find no death or cemetery record for him.
