Facts and Events
In Memoriam
Henry Scheideman was born February 14th, 1881 in Norga, Russia and died January 9th, 1963 in Tulare, California. As a young boy, at the age of about seven, he came to America with his mother, who made her home on a farm near Lehigh, Kansas. It was there that the family came in contact with the Advent message, and with joy and gladness of heart accepted its teachings of present Truth, a faith which our brother cherished to the end.
On April 22, 1906, Henry Scheideman and Hannah Huenergardt were united in marriage, making their home near Shaffer, in Rush County Kansas. Here, they spent the next 15 years in rearing their little family of three, and serving their Community in unselfish ministry; she as teacher of children and youth and he as a wheat grower and creamery operator.
In the winter of 1918-19, when the great influenza epidemic struck the nation, sweeping millions to untimely graves, if any of the folks in the neighborhood ran into serious trouble and needed the reach of a helping hand, they would call for Henry Scheideman. The snow was never too deep nor the wind too sharp for Henry to mount his horse and ride to bring aid to the stricken. At times he found entire families down with the dreaded flu; in one such case, ten in number. Being somewhat of a chef as well, he prepared their food, gave medical care to the best of his ability, and rode on to bring relief to still others in trouble, leaving home in the morning and returning at night through the worst of the epidemic. And with the help of the "Great Physician" he did not lose a single case. A shining reward for faithfulness beyond the call of duty.
In the fall of 1921, the family came West, making their home first near and then in Lodi California. Mrs. Scheideman, truly a "mother in Israel," who preceded her husband in death by some thing less than a year, lived most of her life for others: first for her spouse and her own three children as a devoted wife and a loving mother, then for the children of the church as a kind and faithful teacher and friend, and for the needy of the community for many years as a capable leader and untiring worker of the local Dorcas society. Those who knew her best will testify that she ever lived to bless others. Brother Scheideman, to whose departing we here pay our final tribute and bestow our last respects, spent the closing days of his earthly life in the home of his eldest son, Chester, of Porterville, which were days of lingering illness and patient suffering. He now rests in the hope of the first resurrection at the call of the "Life Giver" and the "last trump" to be reunited with those for whom he lived, to spend eternity in heaven.
He leaves to mourn his passing: one daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Chazotte of El Cajon, California; two sons, Chester Scheideman of Porterville, California; Dr. Oliver Scheideman of Auburn, California; five grand-children, three great-grand-children, a host of relatives and friends.
The internment takes place today, January 14th 1963, when he is laid to rest by the side of his waiting companion, at the Cherokee Memorial Cemetery in Lodi, California.
In conclusion, let us pause to repeat fitting words of inspiration from Rev. 14:13 "and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, 'write, blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth, yea, saith the spirit, that they may rest from their labours, and their works do follow them." So be it. Amen.

Esther's notes have his birthday as Feb 14 1881, while Norka has Feb 14 1880. Discrepancies between Norka's dates and Esther's suggest that Norka may have been using an "old style" calendar where they didn't mark the new year until March.
