It is this census record that led me to believe the Allen children were adopted. If that is so, they must have been raised as Jacksons, because in later census records the Allen was dropped and their last names were Jackson. LATER, Aug 2010: Now I have read a bio of this family and believe my interpretation of the 1850 census is not correct. The bio says nothing about the children being adopted and I note in later census records the middle initial of John and James is not 'A.'. So I'm going to assume an enumerator error and that these children named Allen are actually Jackson children. LATER, Nov 2012: My earlier interpretation of the 1850 census was definitely in error. These were Jackson children, not adopted Allen children. This has been proved by a descendant of Zephaniah Allen Jackon participated in DNA testing at FTDNA. The results of this test give clear indication that he descends from Robert Jackson, immigrant who settled in the early 1600s in Hempstead, New York!!
