Gertrude Cordelia Timothy was born on 17th September 1891 at Wigan in Lancashire, daughter of Anne Webb and Peter Vincent Timothy, a physician and surgeon. Gertrude's parents were not married at the time, and so her birth was actually registered as Gertrude Timothy Webb, although she does not appear to have used the surname Webb after her birth. (The middle name of Cordelia she only appears to have used on her marriage record.) Gertrude's father was not free to marry her mother as he had a wife from whom he was separated. Gertrude had eight surviving older half-siblings from her father's first marriage, although as they lived with their mother it seems unlikely that Gertrude had much, if any, contact with them. Gertrude's parents did eventually marry in 1905, after her father's first wife had died.

The family moved frequently through Gertrude's childhood. By 1893 they had left Lancashire and moved down to Essex, where they had a daughter in 1893 and a son in 1895. They then briefly returned to Lancashire, having a daughter in Manchester in 1896. By 1900 they were living at Longton in Staffordshire, where one of Gertrude's younger brothers died aged five, and where the family appear in the 1901 census living at 50 Uttoxeter Road. The family finally settled around 1903 in Great Yarmouth on the Norfolk coast. The 1911 census finds Gertrude living with her parents and siblings at 33 South Quay in Great Yarmouth.

Gertrude was married on 12th March 1917 at St Nicholas' Church in Great Yarmouth to Stanley Pugh Jones. He worked as a builder's merchant and was from Llanelli in Carmarthenshire. He also served in the army during the First World War which was then ongoing, being posted to Egypt where he rose to the rank of Captain.

Gertrude and Stanley had one son, Peter Stanley Pugh-Jones, who was born in Great Yarmouth later in 1917. Gertrude's parents died a few weeks apart in 1919: her mother on 3rd March and her father on 22nd April.

Gertrude and Stanley later moved to Stanley's native Llanelli. At the outbreak of the Second World War, Gertrude and Stanley were living at a house called Bronygarth on Hendre Road in Llanelli Rural parish, just outside the town itself.

Gertrude and Stanley's son Peter also joined the armed forces, presumably serving during the Second World War, as after the war he described himself as a major. He became a solicitor, appears to have married and had a son shortly after the war, then emigrated with his wife and son to South Africa in 1948. However, Peter died in South Africa in 1951, aged about 34.

Gertrude died in the Carmarthen area in 1964, aged 73. Peter survived her by about two years.
