May Ethel Timothy was born on 13th April 1893 at West Ham in Essex, daughter of Anne Webb and Peter Vincent Timothy, a physician and surgeon. May's parents were not married at the time of her birth - her father was not free to marry her mother as he had a wife from whom he was separated. May had seven surviving much older half-siblings from her father's first marriage, although it seems unlikely that May had much, if any, contact with them. May's parents did eventually marry in 1905, after her father's first wife had died. The order of May's given names was often transposed to be Ethel May, but her birth certificate says May Ethel and in her husband's obituary she was referred to simply as May, suggesting that is the name by which she was known.

The family moved frequently through May's childhood. In 1895 her parents had a son in Romford. They then moved to Lancashire, having a daughter in Manchester in 1896. By 1900 they were living at Longton in Staffordshire, where May's younger brother died aged five, and where the family appear in the 1901 census living at 50 Uttoxeter Road. The family finally settled around 1903 in Great Yarmouth on the Norfolk coast. The 1911 census finds May living with her parents and siblings at 33 South Quay in Great Yarmouth.

May's parents died a few weeks apart in 1919: her mother on 3rd March and her father on 22nd April.

In 1921 May married William Ernest Greenwood in the Newhaven area of Sussex. They went on to have five children between 1922 and 1930, although their first child died as baby.

William became the landlord of the Chequers Hotel at Maresfield in Sussex, and May worked alongside him as the landlady of the hotel. May and William were living there at the outbreak of the Second World War.

William died suddenly at home at the Chequers in Maresfield on 19th April 1947, aged 53. May only survived him by a few weeks, dying in the nearby Tonbridge area of Kent in the summer of 1947, aged 54.
