George L. Schmucker, Clara (Hern) McDermott's uncle, was born on 04 Sep 1861. He married Anistasia Hartnett in1891. He owned a grocery store, the Star Cash Grocery in Dallas, (later called Central Grocery located on Elm Street, between Akard and Stone.) When he opened a branch in Houston, that effectively made it the first grocery chain in Texas. Both Clara and Fred McDermott worked for him. Clara was the bookkeeper, and Fred as a salesman-that's where they met. After they married, they moved to Houston and Fred worked in the store there. William Kendrick Neighbors was the manager of the Houston store, and when the Neighbors adopted their daughter Kenneth, George and his wife Anistasia were her god-parents at her Baptism. George died in 1935.
