George OSWALD, Glasgow tobacco merchant, was b. 30jul1735 and d. 1819 (Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae); he d. 6oct 1819 (Burke's Landed Gentry, 2001). George of Scotstoun and afterwards of Auchincruive (30jul1735-6oct1819). George OSWALD married Margaret SMYTHE/SMITH of Methven, his cousin. George, Glasgow merchant, married Peggy Smythe, 2ne daughter of David Smythe of Methven 17jan1764 at Edinburgh (Glasgow past and present, vol 3, 1884) George OSWALD of Scotstoun and afterwards of Auchincruive (30jul1735-6oct1819) was a “Virginia Don”, had the firm Oswald, Dennistoun and Co. and was partner in the Ship bank with James Dennistoun of Colgrain (Old country houses of the old Glasgow gentry). George was son of Rev. James Oswald (1705 Dunnet manse-3aug1795 Scotstoun) and Elizabeth Murray of Clardon. George of Scotstoun was brother of Alexander Oswald of Shield Hall (Old country houses). Margaret (Peggy) (d. 1792) was 2nd daughter of David Smyth of Methven; she left 4 sons and 7 daughters (Glasgow past and present). George succeeded to Scotstown estate in 1766 (Glasgow past and present). George inherited Auchincruive from his uncle Richard in 1784. A photo of a portrait by Gainsborough of George Oswald (1735 Dunnet manse-1819 Scotstoun Hse) and a portrait of his dau Elizabeth (dau of Margaret Smyth of Methven) were lent to Old Glasgow Exhibition, 1894.
