A photo of a portrait by Gainsborough of George Oswald (1735 Dunnet manse-1819 Scotstoun Hse) and a portrait of his dau Elizabeth (daughter of Margaret Smyth of Methven) were lent to Old Glasgow Exhibition, 1894. From “Minute Book of the Board of Green cloth” (1891) by Colin Dunlop Donald (1848-1895): Alexander Oswald of Changue, advocate, son of George Oswald of Scotstoun and Auchincruive, and Margaret Smyth of Methven. Born at Scotstoun 1777, died at Bath 1821. He married Anne, daughter of Sir Hew Hamilton Dalrymple of North Berwick, but had no issue. His sister Elizabeth, who ultimately succeeded to Scotstoun, was a fine specimen of the old Scottish gentlewoman. Till she was 90 she never needed a doctor, and when she was 84 went to London to see the Exhibition of 1851. She made a fair bid to join theranks of the Glasgow centenarians, but died in 1864, aged 98. References
