George Kempson was born on 9th January 1820 at Totternhoe in Bedfordshire, son of Rebecca Kempson, formerly Turnham, and her husband George Kempson, a straw dealer. When he was baptised on Easter Day 1820, the parish register notes that he was the couple's seventh son. George's mother died in 1833.

The 1841 census finds George working as a straw cutter in the neighbouring village of Eaton Bray. He appears to have died as a young man of 23, being buried on 7th October 1843 at Billington (which was then a chapelry within the parish of Leighton Buzzard).
