George Henry Hutchings was born in 1844 in the parish of Crewkerne in Somerset, son of Mary Ann Hutchings, formerly Forsey, and her husband Edmund Hutchings, a farm bailiff. His birth appears to have been registered simply as George, but he was baptised as George Henry and appears to have been known generally as Henry rather than George.

Shortly after Henry's birth the family left Crewkerne and moved to Whatley in the parish of Winsham where they appear in the 1851 census. They had moved again by the time of the 1861 census to Northover. At this time Henry was working as an agricultural labourer.

Henry left home some time between 1861 and 1871 and went to work on the railways, presumably initially for the Great Western Railway as his next sighting is lodging in Slough and working as a ticket collector. Three weeks after the census he married Louisa Ashley who was from Burnham, just outside Slough. They married at Burnham, but then moved into London. The following month Henry started work for the London and North Western Railway as a porter in the departure suite at London's Euston Station. He was described at that time as being 5'10" tall.

Henry and Louisa's first daughter was born in the Marylebone area of London, but the rest of their seven children were born in St Pancras (the parish which included Euston Station). Each census from 1881 to 1901 finds Henry, Louisa and their children living at 64 Allcroft Road in the Kentish Town area of St Pancras, about two miles north of Euston Station. After 1888 Henry became a guard based at Euston.

Henry died on 16th April 1901, aged 57.
