William Hutchings was born on 22nd January 1838 at Crewkerne in Somerset, son of Mary Ann Hutchings, formerly Forsey, and her husband Edmund Hutchings, an agricultural labourer. The family lived at the hamlet of Woolminstone rather than in the town itself. Young William appears in the 1841 census living with his parents, siblings and paternal grandfather at Woolminstone. In the mid 1840s the family moved to Winsham, where they appear in the 1851 census.

William has yet to be traced after 1851. There seem to have been six William Hutchings from Crewkerne in the 1851 census and four in the 1861 census, making it very hard to be sure which (if any) is him.
