Mary Hutchings was baptised on 18th April 1833 at Crewkerne in Somerset. She was the eldest child of Mary Ann Hutchings, formerly Forsey, and her husband Edmund Wilkins Hutchings, an agricultural labourer. The 1841 census finds Mary's parents and siblings living in the hamlet of Woolminstone in Crewkerne parish, but Mary herself was staying with an aunt on census night at West Street in Crewkerne town. By 1851 the family had moved to Whatley in the parish of Winsham.
In 1856, Mary married William Larcombe. He was also from Crewkerne, having been born at Hewish, a neighbouring hamlet to Woolminstone. However, they did not marry in Crewkerne, but over 130 miles away at St Pancras in the northern suburbs of London, where William was working as a constable in the Metropolitan Police. One of the witnesses to Mary and William's marriage was her sister Ann. In turn, Mary and William were witnesses to Ann's marriage in 1860 at Crewkerne.
Mary and William had several children through the 1860s, all born back in Somerset, even though William appears to have served in the police until 1863 when he was discharged with a pension after being injured. By 1871 Mary and William were living in Lambeth in London's southern suburbs, and William was working as a ticket collector. Mary would have a further two children in London in the 1870s. The family was still in Lambeth in 1881, with William described as a railway policeman. William and Mary appear to have had at least six children together between 1860 and 1875.
By 1891 the family had moved slightly further out of London to Isleworth, then in Middlesex.
Mary died in 1897, aged 64. William outlived her by about seven years.
