George William. Helferich of Mapleton is Killed on Road
Walks in Auto Path
Pioneer of Peninsula was a Verteran of Pine Era
Struck by a car when he walked directly into the path of the vehicle from the should of highway M-42 on-half mile north of Mapleton Thursday Evening, George Helferich, lifelong resident of the Grand Traverse Region, died in Munson Hospital two hours later of injuries sustained in the accident.
Mr. Helferich has been talking with another Peninsule resident, Harry Christopher, who was seated in a car parked on the road. As Mr. Christopher drove away Mr. Helferich stepped back onto the hight in fron to a car driven by Dr. Grace Dewey of Jacksonville, Ill. Dr. Dewey swerved her car into a ditch on the left hand side of the road in an attempt to avoid hitting the aged man, but the right fender struck hom. He suffered fractures of the skull, arm, and lef and died at 9:50 p.m.
State police who investigated stated that Mr. Helferich was hard of hearing and had poor eyesight and apparently did not see the approaching car. The driver was exonerated of all blame.
Dr. H.B. Kyselka, cornoer, investigated and decided that no inquest was necessary.
Mr. Helferich was born in Peninsula Township on May 4, 1860 and lived there his entire life. He was an old time lumberman, beind engaged in this business until the pine of the region was cleared and since then has been in the farming and cherry growing industry. Mr. Helferich workedas a carpenter and a stone mason for a number of years and was well known as an aredent hunter and fisherman. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Lannin on the Peninsule in 1879 and to this union were born five children, two of whom preceded their father in death.
Surviving are two sons, Walter at home and William of Emerson, Wash., one daughter Mrs. Jessie Reynolds of Panama City, Fla., 10 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
The body was taken to Sampson Funeral Home to remain until time of services to be annouced later.

Funeral Sunday
The funeral of George Helferich, 80, a lifelong resident of the Grand Traverse Region who was fatally injured when he walked into the path of an automobile was conduced Sunday afternoon from the Sampson Funeral Home. Rev. Howard R. Towne, pastor of the First Congretional church officiated and burial was made in the Ogdensburg cemetery.
