I have just learned of the family story that George went to L'Anse and died in a poorhouse there. He never married. The story goes that when Lorenzo, in Detroit, learned of his younger brother's whereabouts he expressed a desire to see him. A meeting was arranged - the two brothers met after a separation of some 30 or 40 years. The census of Baraga County 1910 confirms that "George Chapelle" was working as a teamster in the lumber camp in L'Anse.

Death records from L'Anse show a George Chapelle born 3 August 1853, place and parents unknown; died 16 August 1947 of arterioscherosis and senile dementia, contributing cause, hypertension, age 94.

The death record states that Baraga County was his usual place of residence and that he died at the Houghton County Infirmary.

The birth year is wrong on the 1910 census and the death record, but this must be our George. Helen Banks, wife of Burdette, recalls visiting George in L'Anse and taking Enzo to see him.
