Facts and Events
[edit] Frank BourieFrank Bourie, Sr., son of Harriet Alice Stevens and William Curren Bourie, was born September 4, 1874 in Ligonier, Noble County, Indiana. However, on June 3, 1880, Frank is enumerated as a 2 year old in the US Census of Ligonier, Noble County, Indiana. This would indicate that he was born in 1877 rather than 1874. The September 1877 birth is also given in the 1900 US census enumeration. The June 3, 1880 census records that Frank was born in Indiana and living with his parents, Alice and William Bourie. Children in the household were: Mary age 5, Frank age 2, and Gertrude Bourie age 6 months born November 1879. There is also a record of a sister Mae who is said to have died in the birth of her first child. This Mae and the Mary of the census may be the same. Frank was the only child of the three (or four) children to live to maturity. Frank had four marriages with the first two ending in tragedy with his first two wives dieing with Tuberculosis or TB. [edit] 1) Frank Bourie and Jennie Shafer MarriageSarah Jennie Shafer was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia in November 1877. Sarah J. Shafer is enumerated on the 1880 US Census of Rockbridge Co., Virginia as a 3 year old daughter of Nancy J. and William Shafer. The family moved to Grant County, Indiana in 1884. Jennie had an older sister, Margaret Shafer, and younger brother Burtney W. Shafer and sister Ester or Esta Shafer. Margaret Shafer married Harry W. Wootering who evidently was in the management of the local Industrial Indiana Rubber Works. Burtney Shafer became an Indian State Senator. Ester Shafer married a Professor George Carter. So the family seems to be part of the higher Social circle of Jonesboro. On September 3, 1896, Frank Bourie and Sarah Jennie Shafer, daughter of Nancy J Ruley and William D. Shafer, are married in Grant County, Indiana. On June 12, 1900, the young family is enumerated in Mill Township, Grant County, Indiana. Frank Bourie is shown as a 22 year old born in Indiana in September 1877. Sarah J Bourie is 22 years old born in Virginia in November 1877 and has been married 4 years with one child who is still living. The child is enumerated as Roberta M. Bourie, a 2 year old born in Indiana in May 1898. Their second child, a son, William D. Bourie is born soon after on November 1, 1900. [edit] Roberta Mae BourieRoberta Mae Bourie, daughter of Jennie Shafer and Frank Bourie, was born in May 1898 in Indiana. Most likely born in Mill Township, Jonesboro, Grant County.Mae Bourie married Daniel Roscoe "Dan" Hacker. They had two children. [edit] William D. Bourie
[edit] Frank Bourie Joins US NavyFrank Bourie joined the US Navy sometime during the next few years and we find him on the USS Truxton (DD-14) headed for the Pacific in the 1906-1907 report of the ships action. Available information on the USS Truxtun indicates that it operated in the Atlantic during this period up until December 1907 when it sailed from Hampton Roads, Virginia as part of the "Great White Fleet." The "Great White Fleet" was a floatilla of US Navy ships ordered on an around-the-world- cruise by Pesident Teddy Roosevelt to impress the World powers of the US Naval strength. Sometime after the birth of their son in 1900 and prior to the next US Census on April 22, 1910, Jennie Shafer Bourie had died. Perhaps she died before Frank joined the Navy about 1906. Family tradition is that her death was from TB. Frank Bourie, a widower, is enumerated living with his parents and children in the April 22, 1910 US Census of Jonesboro, Mill Township, Grant County, Indiana. [edit] 2) Frank Bourie's Second MarriageThis marriage is thought to have been before 1907. Frank is reported on the USS Truxtun headed for the Pacific in 1906 to 1907 time period and the Truxtun extended into 1909. The second wife of Frank died early in the marriage of TB according to family tradition. There are no known children from this second marriage. [edit] 3) Frank Bourie and Ada V. Morrow MarriageAda V. Morrow was born September 1879 in Ohio. Ada was the daughter of John Morrow. In the US Census enumeration on June 13-14, 1910 of Ada Township, Harden County, Ohio, we find Frank Bourie as a boarder with the family of John Morrow on North Gilbert Street. John Morrow is a 62 year old widower who had been married 26 years and had two children, both living. His two children are still living in the household. Joe Morrow age 32 and Ada Morrow, a divorcee, age 30 both born in Ohio. John was listed as a blacksmith and Joe was a salesman in a grocery store. Frank Bourie was listed as a contractor. Living in the household as a visiting boarder is no doubt how the couple became acquainted. They were not yet married in June 1910. Frank Bourie married Ada V Morrow about 1911. Frank and Ada had four children per the 1920 US Census. On June 21, 1920 US Census of Mill Township, Grant County, Indiana, Ada and the four girls are enumerated. Frank is not in the household. [edit] Alice Texas BourieAlice Texas Bourie was born in Michigan about 1911. Alice is enumerated as an 8 year old daughter born in Michigan and living with her mother, in the June 21, 1920 US Census of Mill Township, Grant County, Indiana. The recollections of three of her younger step-sisters at a family reunion in 2001, was that she had died by 1951 when their father died. [edit] Pauline BouriePauline Bourie was born in Florida about 1912. Pauline is enumerated as a 7 year old daughter born in Florida and living with her mother, in the June 21, 1920 US Census of Mill Township, Grant County, Indiana. No other information on this daughter is known at this time. [edit] Madelyn BourieMadelyn Bourie was born in Florida in July 1916. Madelyn, her sisters and her mother moved back to Indiana about 1919. Madelyn is enumerated as a 3 and 11/12 year old daughter born in Florida and living with her mother, in the June 21, 1920 US Census of Mill township, Grant County, Indiana. The recollections of her younger step-sisters in a family reunion in 2001 is that Madelyn Bourie married E. Roy Smith. [edit] Doris BourieDoris Thelma Bourie was born in Florida in November 1918. Doris, her sisters and her mother moved back to Indiana soon after. Doris is enumerated as a 1 and 8/12 year old daughter born in Florida and living with her mother, in the June 21, 1920 US Census of Mill Township, Grant County, Indiana. [edit] 4) Frank Bourie and Beulah Wade MarriageBeulah Leola Wade was born November 22, 1908 in Mayo, Lafayette County, Florida. Beulah was the third of seven children of Flora McInnis and Oglethorpe T. Wade. Beulah’s nineteen month old baby brother died in August of 1912. Beulah’s mother, her 3 year old baby brother and her 3 month old baby sister died in a railroad crossing accident when a train hit their car on April 6, 1919. So Beulah experienced much tragedy in her early life. Beulah did have an older sister and brother and another younger brother who survived and they were always very close. Frank Bourie apparently is still married to Ada Morrow with four children in January 6, 1920 Census. Ada and the Family are in Jonesboro, Indiana but Frank is not living with the family. Frank has not yet been located in the 1920 Census. It is not known what happens in the next four years. However, on December 23, 1923, Beulah Bourie married Frank Bourie in Dixie County, Florida. Frank Bourie was about 15 years older than Beulah’s father, O.T. Wade, but they were good friends. During 1924 and 1925, Frank Bourie, Sr. was building the Peoples Bank Building in St Cloud, Florida. This bank building opened in 1925. It was designed by Ryan and Roberts and built by Frank Bourie of Kissimmee. The bank failed in 1928. In 1933, it housed the Osceola National Re-employment Service. Originally, the only Mediterranean Revival elements were the symmetrical parapet walls, but the later addition of stucco has lent it a more Spanish appearance. A photo of the Building is shown below. In the 1935 Florida State Census, Frank, a general contractor and his young family are enumerated in Precinct 2 (Mayo), Lafayette, Florida. Flora Alice age 10, Betty Jean age 9, Frank Jr. age 6, are listed as students in school. The younger daughter is listed as 6 years old and occupied with "Daily Home Chores". The youngest son is not yet 1 year old. Frank is recorded as having had 12 years of school. In the 1945 Florida State Census, Frank and his family are enumerated in the (Imeson) Airport Area, Duval County, Florida. Frank and Beulah had nine children. Six are deceased.
