Alice Stevens and William Bourie Marriage

On 26 February 1872 Edward Richman, Justice of the Peace, married William Bourie and Alice Stevens, daughter of Angeline Sheppherd and William Stevens in Albion, Noble County, Indiana. A photo of the couple with Alice's brother, Clark Stevens is shown here and another is found on the web[[1]]. The family with three children is enumerated in the 12 June 1880 US Census of Ligonier, Nobel County, Indiana. The couple had two daughters, one other child, and one son, Frank Bourie, Sr., My Grandchildren's Great Grandfather. William Curren Bourie indicates that he is a stone mason in the 1880 census. The family must have a large house in Ligonier, because 12 boarders are living with the family of five at the time of the 1880 census. In the 1889 obituaries of his parents, William is said to be operating a grocery store in Ligonier. Perhaps the Grocery Store had rooms for a Boarding House above.

Their Children

The 1900 and 1910 US Census enumeration of William and Alice Bourie records that Alice had given birth to four children. The Census further records that only one had survived until 12 June 1900. Since Frank Bourie her parents enumerates that Alice had given birth to four children but only one child. From this, we know that Frank survived, Mae married but, with two other of her siblings, died before 1900.

1) Mae Bourie

Mae Bourie was born about 1874 in Noble County, Indiana. May Bourie is enumerated as a 5 year old daughter, born in Indiana, living with the family in the 12 June 1880 US Census of Ligonier, Noble County. Mae Bourie married Charles McKeever on 20 April 1895 in Jefferson Township, Grant County, Indiana. Family tradition is that she died in childbirth. A photograph if Mae is posted on the web[[2]]. She seems to have died before the June 1900 US Census. The 1900 US Census for her parents enumerates that her mother, Alice, had given birth to four children but only one child, Frank, was still living. Nothing further is know about this daughter at this time.

2) Frank Bourie, Sr.

Frank Bourie (Sr.) was born 4 September 1874 in Ligonier, Noble county, Indiana. However, Frank is enumerated as a 2 year old, born in Indiana and living with his parents in Ligonier, Noble County in the June 1880 US Census. On 3 September 1896, Frank Bourie and Sarah Jennie Shafer, daughter of Nancy J Ruley and William D. Shafer, are married in Grant County, Indiana. This is Frank Bourie's first of four marriages. More information can be found on the Frank Bourie page.

3) Gertrude Bourie

Gertrude Bourie was born in November 1879. Gertrude is enumerated as a 6 month old daughter, born Nov. in Indiana, living with the family in the 12 June 1880 US Census of Ligonier, Noble County, Indiana. The 1900 Census of her birth family indicates that her mother, Alice, had four children and only one child was still living at that time. This would indicate that she died before June 1900. No further information is known at this time.

4) (Fourth child) Bourie

A fourth child may have been either born and died before the 12 June 1880 US Census or after the 1880 census and before the June 1900 census. There is no further information known at this time.

William and Alice Bourie's Later Years

William is enumerated by his middle name,Curren Bourie, living with his wife Alice in Jonesboro, Grant County, Indiana in the June 1900 US Census. The 1900 US Census states that they had been married 28 years, had 4 children, but only one child was still living. Son Frank is assumed to be that only living child. On 22 April 1910, William and Alice are enumerated in Jonesboro, Grant county, Indiana. Again it is indicated that they had now been married 38 years with four children and only one survived. A widowed son Frank and his two children, Berta M. and William D. are also living in the household. Berta M. Bourie is taken to be Berta Mae Bourie. William is recorded as a stone and brick mason and there are no boarders listed in the household. Perhaps they had moved to their last home in Jonesboro which is shown below by 1910. On 3 January 1920, William and Alice are enumerated again in Jonesboro. William is now shown to be 70 years old and working as a laborer at the Indiana Rubber Works. Living with her grandparents is Frank's daughter, 21 year old May who is also shown to be employed at the Indiana Rubber Works. Frank's brother-in-Law, Harry W. Wootring, husband of Margret Shaffer Wootring was apparently well connected at The Rubber Works. After William's death, Frank's daughter Mae remained in this home and Alice traveled to Florida to live with her son and Mae's father, Frank Bourie, Sr. Alice died in Florida. Alice S. Bourie is buried in Wayfare Cemetery at Mayo, Lafayette Co., Florida.. A memorial page on the Find-A-Grave website hosts a photo of Alice and the cemetery marker [[3]].
