Birth

Prior to being married the first child of Samuel Zorge en Elisabeth Mentzel, Franciscus Anthonius Marinus Zorge (21 Feb 1843 in Haarlem), was born. In his birth certificate [1] it can be seen that the occupation of Anne Theodore Elisabeth Mentzel was that of a worker and she lived at the Achter Nieuwe Gracht in Haarlem. In the birth certificate Samuel Zorge was the one that declared the birth of his son and recognized him as his son and that of Anne Theodore Elisabeth Mentzel. However, Franciscus Anthonius Marinus Zorge was born out of wedlock. in his birth certificate it is written that he was born at 8:30 p.m. on 21 February 1843 in Haarlem.

Moving with family

Next, we find Franciscus Anthonius Marinus Zorge, together with his family, in the census records of Amsterdam 1853-1863 [2]. Here he lived in the basement of Utrechtsche Dwarsstraat 233:
1. Samuel Zorge, born 18 November 1811 in Dreischor, married, Nederlands Hervormd, occupation: employee at the hospital, arrived in 1846, died on 17 January 1856;
2. Anne Theodore Elisabeth Mentzel, born 12 May 1818 in Gent, married, Roman Catholic, no occupation, arrived in 1846;
3. Franciscus Anthonius Marinus Zorge, born 21 February 1843 in Haarlem, unmarried, Roman Catholic, no occupation, arrived in 1846;
4. Anna Maria Francisca Zorge, born 15 November 1844 in Haarlem, unmarried, Roman Catholic, no occupation, arrived in 1846;
We also find a census record from 1851-1853, also at the Utrechtsche Dwarsstraat 233 [3]. The registration is the same with the exception that the occupation of Samuel Zorge is registered as "warden third class in the hospital" and the arrival date is 14 December 1846.

We find several registrations for Franciscus Anthonius Marinus Zorge in the hospital in 1863 [4], 1866 [5] and 1867 [6]. We find the following information:
1863: arrived 1 December 1863, Roman Catholic, 20 years old, occupation: shoemaker, living at Utrechtsche Dwarsstraat 233 in Amsterdam, nursed for 7 days;
1866: arrived 24 November 1866, Roman catholic, 23 years old, occupation: shoemaker, living at Utrechtsche Dwarsstraat 233 in Amsterdam, no date registered for leaving the hospital;
1867: left the hospital after 123 days nursing on 3 March 1867.

After this we find a registration in the militia records [7] with the following information:
1. Number 69, Franciscus Anthonius Marinus Zorge, born 21 February 1843 in Haarlem, living in Amsterdam, son of Samuel Zorge (passed away) and Elisabeth Mentzel, occupation: shoemaker;
2. Length: 1,51 meters, oval face, blue eyes, round chin, brown hair, ordinary mouth and forehead;
3. Exempt from militia service due to the fact that he is the only son and too small.

We find a very remarkable record is the Westfries archive where we find a notary record [8]. In this record Franciscus Anthonius Marinus Zorge agrees to take over the National Militia service for a certain Klaas Kooimans, living in Andijk, who was selected for the National Militia. Klaas Kooimans promised to pay Franciscus Anthonius Marinus Zorge the sum of 250 Dutch guilders to fulfill his National Militia service, separated in parts: 50 guilders if he would pass the selection by the "militieraad", 25 guilders if passed by the corps and 4 guilders every week for fulfilling the service. It is apparent from the exclusion of National Militia that this sum was never paid. Selling one's service in the National Militia was not sledom done. For the poor this was a way to maken some money, but in the case of Franciscus Zorge he was too small and not selected.

Marriage

We find several census records over the period 1874-1893 at the Nassaukade 340 from February 1883-June 1883 [9], Marnistraat 13 from September 1880-January 1881 [10], Nieuwe Leliestraat 59 from April 1882-February 1883 [11], Prinsengracht 750 from January 1883-November 1883 when they left to Rotterdam [12], Runstraat 22 from January 1881-April 1882 [13], Oude Looijersstraat 34 from January 1874-September 1880 [14] and Fokke Simonszstraat 24 from 24 December 1883-April 1884 in Amsterdam [15]. We find one registration in Rotterdam: Rottestraat 1 from 11 November 1883 till 8 December 1883 [16]. In most census records his occupation was mentioned as a bootmaker.

All these census records are from the period after he married [17]. On 17 June 1874 at 31 years of age he married Carolina Petronella Nassette, 25 years old, without occupation, living in Amsterdam, daughter of Joannes Bernardus Nassette and Alida Maria Deijlius. Together with her he moved through Amsterdam through these many addresses.

In the Amsterdam archives we can find the death certificate of Franciscus Anthonius Marinus Zorge [18]. In this certificate we can find that he died on 4 October 1888 at 8:30 a.m. in their house in the Jacob van Campenstraat 12.
