She was always known as "Chan." She was described as a lively and fun-loving person who was active in social affairs and an enthusiastic sailor who taught her sons to sail. During summers, she spent much time sailing at a home the family owned in a summer community of Hartford families at Fenwick, Connecticut that included among neighbors the family of the actress Katherine Hepburn who lived there until her death.
