Known for her studies on premature babies and their care, she was a professor at Yale University and associate of the U.S. Children's Bureau. She never married. Her lifelong companion, Dr. Martha Elliott, was chief of the U.S. Children's Bureau and an Associate Director of the World Health Organization.
