Ernest Augustus Timothy was born on 13th March 1886 at Liverpool in Lancashire, son of Anne Webb and Peter Vincent Timothy, a physician and surgeon. Ernest's parents were not married at the time, and so Ernest's birth was actually registered as Ernest Augustus Timothy Webb, although he does not appear to have used the surname Webb after his birth. Ernest's father was not free to marry his mother as he had a wife from whom he was separated. Ernest had eight surviving older half-siblings from his father's first marriage, although as they lived with their mother it seems unlikely that Ernest had much, if any, contact with them. Ernest's parents did eventually marry in 1905, after his father's first wife had died.

The family moved frequently through Ernest's childhood. In 1888 he had a younger sister born in St Helens. They then moved to Wigan, where another two children were born in 1890 and 1891 and where the family appeared in the 1891 census living at 95 Wallgate. By 1893 they had left Lancashire and moved down to Essex, where they had a daughter in 1893 and a son in 1895. They then briefly returned to Lancashire, having a daughter in Manchester in 1896. By 1900 they were living at Longton in Staffordshire, where one of Ernest's younger brothers died aged five, and where the family appear in the 1901 census living at 50 Uttoxeter Road. The family finally settled around 1903 in Great Yarmouth on the Norfolk coast.

The 1911 census finds Ernest living with his parents and siblings at 33 South Quay in Great Yarmouth. By this time he was working as a plater, presumably in the local shipbuilding industry.

In 1915, aged 29, Ernest married Daisy Hilda Gilham, who had worked as a machinist at an outfitter's factory. They had twin sons the following year, who were born in the Dartford area. They later returned to Great Yarmouth.

Ernest's parents died a few weeks apart in 1919; his mother died on 3rd March, and his father died on 22nd April.

At the outbreak of the Second World War, Ernest, Daisy and one of their sons were living at 53 Albany Road in Great Yarmouth.

Ernest died on 9th May 1960 at the Northgate Hospital in Great Yarmouth, aged 74. Daisy survived him by nearly 14 years.
