Emma Elizabeth Mayo was born in 1854 in Hitchin, the daughter of a brickmaker named William Mayo and his wife Sarah Smith. Although William and Sarah had married six years earlier, Emma is their eldest known child. The 1861 census finds Emma living with her parents and paternal grandmother at Bedford Street, on the west side of Hitchin.

Emma appears to have died aged 10 in 1864.
