Grew up on family farm and by the time he reached the age of 12, he had a heavy workload. His father in Detroit much of the time attending to the selling of butter and eggs from the farm, his two older brothers had left home and the two younger brothers were not yet able to help much. Hours long and hard and the farm was not very productive due to poor soil. Graduated from Utica Mich high school in 1913, he went to Detroit after the graduation and held various jobs so he could start going to college from money he earned. Inspired by his uncle, Elmer Runyan, he became interested in getting a job in Washington D.C., enrolling in night school while working. Early in 1917 he received an appointment as clerk in the Adjutants General's Office of the U.S. Army. When World War I cae he resigned at the Adjutants office, when he was about to enlist in the Air Corps when he was drafted into the Army. After his discharge, went to the university of Mich. in the Engineering School. Work in the vocational training program and worked part time at various jobs. He was employed by the U.S. Patent Office. Later he studied at George Washington University to study law. Got law degree in 1926. in 1926 he left the Patent office and joined a Patent law firm in New York City and later moved to a larger firm where he made a partner. In 1973 he received a award from the American Patent Law Association honoring 50 years of service in the field of patents, trademarks and copyrights. Jan 1 1976 he became of Counsel with the status of consultant to the firm. Elmer and Gertrude first met in New York the summer before their marriage when Gertrude, a teacher in Shreveport, Louisiana , was in New York for a summer course at Columbia university. They resided in Scars dale, N. Y. til death. Elmer remembered for his kindness and strength. He was independent and proud and by his will and perseverance he made his impossible dream come true.
