Facts and Events
Ellen McLaughlin was more than likely the sister (or at least cousin) of Henry McLaughlin who was born in County Tyrone, Ireland on 15 December 1815, and died there on 4 April 1892. According to information passed down by Hugh and Ellen (McLaughlin) Donnelly's family, Henry McLaughlin's grandson, George Vincent McLaughlin (b. Brooklyn, NY 20 May 1887; d. New York, NY, 7 December 1967), who served as Police Commissioner of New York City in 1926, was a relative. Henry would be too young to be identified with the Henry McLaughlin who was living in Bloomfield, Essex County, New Jersey in 1830 with so many men. But two of his grandchildren, children of his son Cornelius McLaughlin (b. County Tyrone in 1843, d. Brooklyn in 1896) have connections to Essex County, NJ. Two of Cornelius's children, John and Rosetta, were living on William Street in Belleville in 1900 with their cousin Catherine Kelley. John was born in Brooklyn and died in Newark in 1909, and was buried in St. Peter's R.C. Church cemetery, Belleville. Rosetta's address at one point was 192 South 3rd St., Brooklyn. This would have been just a few doors away from Henry McLaughlin, father of George V. McLaughlin. Rosetta (b. Brooklyn, 27 January 1881; d. Belleville?, January 1926) married Thomas Arthur Connolly of Essex County, New Jersey. She is closely related to Mary McKeon Ostertag/Osterday of Brooklyn, who died in 1919, since Mary Ostertag/Osterday's probate records list Ellen McLaughlin Donnelly's grandchildren as relatives (cousins). She seems to be a niece of Ellen McLaughlin Donnelly. The relationship of these McLaughlins to the family of Hugh McLaughlin (b. Brooklyn, 2 April 1826; d. Brooklyn, 7 December 1904) the Brooklyn politico, has yet to be determined. However the prevalence of jobs as ferryboat captains and the like in both families, would hint at a relationship. And "Police Inspector McLaughlin" is referred to as "a distant relative" in his Boston Globe obituary [1]. References
