Facts and Events
Year of Birth for Hugh McLaughlin The birth year for Hugh McLaughlin, Brooklyn's long term political leader, is reported as early as 1825 and as late as 1828. In the vanity sketch published in Peter Ross's "History of Long Island," Vol. 2, 1902 edition, Hugh McLaughlin's birth year is recorded as 1825. Cornelius McLaughlin, Hugh's older brother, died 21 Mar 1899. In his two obituaries, it is noted that Cornelius was 2 years older than Hugh. The NYT's obituary gives Cornelius' age was 72, and The Sun's obituary gives his age as 74, making Cornelius' birth year as 1827 or 1825. Either of these dates places Hugh's birth year as 1825 or earlier. The Brooklyn Standard Union on 2 Apr 1897 in its article, "Hale at Seventy - Ex-Register Hugh McLaughlin," stated that Hugh "may or may not be 70." In answer to a reporter's question about his age, Hugh replied "Well, if the newspaper say so [70], what is the good of denying or affirming it?" He was apparently a stamp collector, since the Valentine (Neb.) Democrat of 12 July 1904 reported that he had collected 1,024,000 stamps. McLaughlin Park was named after him. [1] References
