The birth year for Hugh McLaughlin, Brooklyn's long term political leader, is reported as early as 1825 and as late as 1828. In the vanity sketch published in Peter Ross's "History of Long Island," Vol. 2, 1902 edition, Hugh McLaughlin's birth year is recorded as 1825.

Cornelius McLaughlin, Hugh's older brother, died 21 Mar 1899. In two obituaries, it is noted that Cornelius was 2 years older than Hugh. The NYT's obituary gives Cornelius' age as and The Sun's obituary gives his age as 74, making Cornelius' birth year as 1827 or 1825. Either of these dates places Hugh's birth year as 1825 or earlier.
