Ellen Sarah Harry was born on 28th June 1866 at Plymouth in Devon, daughter of Jane Harry, formerly Drake, and her husband William Richard Harry, a shipwright. Ellen appears in the 1871 and 1881 censuses living with her parents and siblings at Claremont Street and Claremont Place in Plymouth. Ellen was the seventh of nine children, although her parents' first child had died as a baby, and Ellen's younger sister Lilian also died as a baby and her younger sister Elizabeth died aged eight, leaving Ellen the youngest of six children who survived to adulthood.
In 1884, when Ellen was 18, her father died.
By 1891 Ellen had left home and was working as a cook for a publican at Camelford in Cornwall. She later returned to Plymouth, where she was married in 1893, aged 27, to William Henry Ball. The following year Ellen's mother died.
Ellen and William had eight children together, but five of them died young. Their existence is only known from the 1911 census recording how many children had been born. The 1901 and 1911 census each find Ellen, William and their children living at William Street in Plymouth. William worked as a stationary engine driver and dock labourer for a chemical manufacturer.
Of Ellen's three children who lived to adulthood, she saw her elder son Cecil marry in 1920 and her daughter Millicent marry in 1929. Ellen became a grandmother in 1925 when Cecil's son was born. He would be the only grandchild born in Ellen's lifetime; Millicent appears not to have had children whilst Louis did not marry until after Ellen's death.
Ellen died in 1944, aged 78. William survived her by just over two years.
