Amelia Jane Harry was born in 1855 at Bere Ferrers in Devon, daughter of Jane Harry, formerly Drake, and her husband William Richard Harry, a shipwright. She was the third of their nine children and the second eldest of the six who lived to adulthood. Shortly after Amelia's birth the family moved to Dartmouth, where her sister Louisa was born in 1857, before settling in Plymouth by 1859, where all her other younger siblings were born. The 1861 census finds Amelia living with her parents and siblings at 12 Claremont Street in Plymouth.
By 1871 Amelia had left home and was working as a domestic servant in the household of a furnishing warehouseman in Plymouth. She stayed in domestic service for over twenty years. By 1881 she was working as cook for a Miss Middleton who lived at 27 Wyndham Square, a grand square of Georgian houses to the west of the town centre. In 1884 Amelia's father died.
Amelia stayed working for Miss Middleton for over ten years; she was still at 27 Wyndham Square in the 1891 census. One of the other servants at 27 Wyndham Square in the 1891 census was a Leonora Trengrove. Amelia's mother died in 1894.
The 1901 census finds Amelia visiting Leonora Trengrove in Devonport, where she was the head of what appears to have been a small boarding house.
Amelia died in 1909, aged 54.

Although Lenora and Amelia are both apparently described as dock labourers, this is only by ditto marks continued from the previous household. Both also originally had their ages put in the male column, then crossed out and put in the female column, suggesting a certain degree of error in this census return.
