William Henry Tremeer Ball was born on 18th October 1866 at Staddiscombe in the parish of Plymstock in Devon. He was the son of Eliza Ball, formerly Tremeer, and her husband Richard Ball, a labourer. William appears in each census from 1871 to 1891 living with his parents and wider family at Staddiscombe.
In 1893 he married Ellen Sarah Ball from Plymouth. They had eight children together, but five died young. The 1901 and 1911 censuses each find the family living at William Street in Plymouth. William worked as a stationary engine driver and as a dock labourer for a chemical manufacturer.
At the outbreak of the Second World War, William and Ellen were living at 50 Tracey Street in Plymouth. Ellen died in 1944. William outlived her by just over two years and died in 1947, aged 80.
