Childhood
Elizabeth Ward was born on 21st August 1812 in the parish of Great Hale in Lincolnshire. She was the third of eight children of a carpenter called Luke Ward and his wife Ann Allam. The family were Baptists, and so did not have their children baptised as infants; Elizabeth's maternal grandfather was a deacon of the Baptist Church in the neighbouring village of Heckington. Elizabeth was not baptised as a child, but was baptised as an adult at the age of 34, on the same day as five of her other siblings.
Adulthood
When she was 21, Elizabeth had a daughter who was baptised Elizabeth Turner Ward at Heckington. Elizabeth Turner Ward's baptism records that the reputed father was Edward Turner, a farmer of Heckington. There only appears to have been one such Edward Turner, who was also 21 at the time of Elizabeth Turner Ward's baptism.
Two and a half years later, on 17th May 1836, aged 23, Elizabeth married an agricultural labourer and shepherd called Robert Walton, who was also from Great Hale and a couple of years younger than her. Elizabeth and Robert went on to have another six children together between 1836 and 1848, all being born at Great Hale. Each census from 1841 to 1871 finds Elizabeth and Robert living in Great Hale with some of their children.
Elizabeth's eldest son married in 1857, and Elizabeth's first known grandchild was born the following year. She had at least 32 grandchildren born in her lifetime, although several died young. Elizabeth also outlived two of her children; her son Luke died aged 44 in 1883 in Leeds leaving a widow and three surviving children, whilst Elizabeth's son John died a bachelor aged 39 at Great Hale in 1885.
Robert does not appear to have been at home on census night in 1881, when Elizabeth was living alone in Great Hale.
Elizabeth died on 1st February 1889 at Great Hale, aged 76. Robert died later that same month, dying at Great Hale on 27th February 1889, aged 74.

Baptised same day as siblings Edward Allam, William, Luke, Catharine, and Rebecca. This baptism has been linked to the Elizabeth Ward who was the mother of Elizabeth Turner Ward on the basis of her maternal grandfather's will, which explicitly names Elizabeth Turner Ward, Elizabeth and her parents Luke and Ann Ward. This Elizabeth Ward can also be linked to the Elizabeth Ward who married Robert Walton on the basis that two of the witnesses to that marriage were Luke and Ann Ward, and that in the 1841 census Elizabeth Turner Ward was living with Elizabeth and Robert Walton.
