Edward Allam Ward was born on 25th April 1831 at Great Hale in Lincolnshire, son of Ann Ward, formerly Allam, and her husband Luke Ward, a carpenter. Edward was not baptised as an infant; the family were Baptists, with Edward's maternal grandfather John Allam being deacon of the Baptist chapel at nearby Heckington. Edward would not be baptised until he was 16 years old.

John Allam died in 1841, and Edward was left some property at Great Hale in his grandfather's will. The census taken later that year finds Edward living with his parents and siblings on South Street in Great Hale. Edward's father died in 1844.

By 1851 Edward had left home and was working as an apprentice saddler in Heckington. Back in Great Hale, his mother died in 1857.

In 1861 Edward appears in the village of Billinghay, and by 1871 he had settled in the town of Boston. From at least 1871 to 1901 he lived with a lady called Elizabeth Jessop. In the censuses he was always described as her lodger, although the fact that they lived together for so long and in at least three different addresses in Boston may indicate that they could have been in a relationship. She had three children from a previous relationship with a man called Robert Maidens, and she sometimes called herself Elizabeth Maidens even though she had not been married to Robert.

Edward lived with Elizabeth Jessop at Corpus Christi Lane in 1871, at Silver Street Court in 1881 and at Botolph Street in 1891 and 1901. He was described as a saddler and harness maker.

Edward died in Boston on 15th November 1904, aged 73.
