Hannah Ward was born in 1828 at Great Hale in Lincolnshire, daughter of Ann Ward, formerly Allam, and her husband Luke Ward, a carpenter. Hannah was not baptised as an infant; the family were Baptists, with Hannah's maternal granfather, John Allam, being deacon of the Baptist chapel in the neighbouring village of Heckington.

John Allam died in 1841, leaving Hannah a house at Great Hale and part of a garden. The census later that year finds Hannah living with her parents and siblings on South Street in Great Hale. Hannah's father died at Great Hale in 1844.

By 1846 Hannah had left home and was working as a servant in the nearby village of Kirkby la Thorpe. She was baptised there in 1846. The 1851 census finds her working as a house servant for a farmer at Kirkby la Thorpe. One of the other servants in the house was a George Alcock.

Hannah and George went on to marry on 24th June 1856 at Great Hale. Hannah's mother died at Great Hale in February 1857.

After their marriage Hannah and George settled at Kirkstead, adjoining the small but growing resort town of Woodhall Spa. George worked as a cottager and labourer. They had one son, also called George, born there in the summer of 1857. The following year, after just two years of marriage, George died, aged 43, in August 1858.

Hannah and her son appear in the 1861 census living at Branston with various other members of the Alcock family, who were presumably her late husband's relatives.

Hannah later returned to the Woodhall Spa area, marrying again on 26th July 1858 at St Andrew's Church there, to Pelham Fynes, an agricultural labourer. Hannah and Pelham went on to have another son, also called Pelham Fynes, later in 1868.

The 1871 and 1881 censuses each find Pelham and Hannah living on Mill Lane in the area then known as Langton Moor, being the part of Langton parish which adjoined Woodhall Spa. Pelham was described variously as an agricultural labourer and cottager.

Hannah died at Kirkstead on 22nd September 1889, aged 60. Pelham survived her by 25 years.
