George Alcock was baptised on 20th August 1815 at Timberland in Lincolnshire, son of a farmer called James Alcock and his wife Mary. George appears in the 1841 census working as an agricultural labourer at Heighington, about eleven miles north of Timberland.
By 1851 George was working as a servant for a farmer at Kirkby la Thorpe, about eleven miles south of Timberland. One of the other servants in the household was Hannah Ward, from the nearby village of Great Hale. Just over five years later George and Hannah were married, on 24th June 1856 at Great Hale. George was described as a cottager at the time of the marriage, and was said to be living at Langton by Spilsby.
After their marriage, George and Hannah settled at Kirkstead, where the village straddled the parish of Kirkstead and a detached part of the parish of Langton (also known as Langton by Horncastle) which also included the small but growing resort of Woodhall Spa. George and Hannah appear to have lived in the part of Kirkstead village which then fell in the parish of Langton. It is possible that this was the Langton that George had been living in at the time of their marriage and a mistake was made on their marriage record - it seems unlikely, albeit not impossible, that he would move from one parish called Langton to another parish called Langton seventeen miles away.
George and Hannah had one son, also called George, born at Kirkstead in the summer of 1857.
About a year later, on 28th August 1858, George died, aged 43. Hannah survived him by over thirty years.
