John Walton was baptised on 21st September 1845 at Great Hale in Lincolnshire, son of Elizabeth Walton, formerly Ward, and her husband Robert Walton, an agricultural labourer and shepherd. John appears in the 1851 census living with his parents and siblings at Sharpe Row in Great Hale.

By 1861 John had left home and was working as a carter at South Fen in Great Hale.

John's next sighting is twenty years later, when he was living in Burton upon Trent in Staffordshire, some 66 miles west of Great Hale. He was lodging with a family there and working as a labourer. He does not appear to have ever married.

John later returned to his native Great Hale, where he died on 16th May 1885, aged 39. Both his parents survived him.
