Helen (Green) Driver (this writer's grandmother), who provided much of the original information about the families, said that Angeline's father was a John Rhobacker (spelling was tentative.) A man of that name is buried in Leek Cemetery, Alaeidon Twp, Ingham Co, Mi, where a number of the family is also buried. This information was considered correct until a copy of Angeline's death certificate was obtained. The death certificate names Sheldon Bradley as Angeline's father. Further information has been obtained from Yates Publishing, PO Box 67, Stevensville, MT 59870. This information confirms (in part) what Helen said. It seems Betsey Shupe (or Shule, as the death certificate says) was married twice, first to Sheldon Bradley in 1842, and then to John Rhobacker in 1845. My name is Rhonda and my query is for any Rohrbacher's (or Rhobacker's) in the Vermillion Twp. area of Erie Co. This is the first of our name to appear in any US census (1850). His name is John Rhobacker. He married Betsy (Eliz.) Bradly 2-12-1845 in Erie Co. Their children, 1) Christian b. 1845, 2) Christina b. 1848, 3) Elizabeth b. 1851, 4) George b. 1852, 5) Charles b. 1854, 6) Alwilda b. 1857, 6) Ida b. 1859, and 2 Bradly children from Betsy's 1st marriage. All born in Erie Co. John was born in Prussia in 1824, Elizabeth born in Pennsylvania, 1824. George is our Gr. Grandfather and he married Amanda Shull in Ft. Wayne, IN Feb. 1872. I have much info on their whereabouts after they moved to MICH in mid 1860's. Need help in finding where John could have been prior to 1845. In progress of checking ships lists, but if he came as a child, we do not know his parents names. E-Mail me at Rholinken@@aol.com. From Bob McClure Despite a similarity in names, I don't think I have much that would be of help to you. My Shupe ancestor was Elizabeth (Betsey) Shupe, b. 1811, the daughter of Jacob Shupe. She was the first white child born in Amherst Township, Lorain County. She married John Clay June 27 1830 and appears to have remained married to him until John Clay's death in 1853. Their last child was born in 1850. One of her sons, Henry J. Clay, was born (probably in Lorain Co.) in 1834 and married Eliza Shoop in Vermillion, Ohio on May 18, 1861. From her obituary, I have that she was born October 15, 1843 in Lorain Co. to Adam and Margaret Shoop. [Adam is our Betsey's brother.] Henry and Eliza both died in Antwerp, Ohio in 1899 and 1918, respectively. Two of Eliza's sisters were living in 1918 - Mary (Hahn) and Lottie (Perry). Sorry, but this is all I have on any folks with the Shoop spelling. As a matter of interest, my ancestor was Henry Clay's brother Christopher. Christopher emigrated to Auglaize County about 1961 following his marriage in Lorain County. The descendants of these two Western Ohio Clay families kept in contact at least until the 1950's despite being separated by about 50 miles. PS - the Rohrbacher name is (or at least was) fairly common in Auglaize County, but I'm not aware of any Lorain Co. connection. From Driver Memoirs, written by Byron Driver's family - from Joyce Bowers From Angeline herself we have learned bits of the history of her early life. Captain Bradley went down with his ship during a storm on Lake Erie, leaving behind his wife and two young daughters, Mary and Angeline. She later married a man whose name was Rorabacher and by whom she raised a large family. ... Both the Driver and Rorabacher families had a close relationship, often visiting back and forth... Several of the families tiring of their long hame had it legally shortened to Roback. Another name Mom mentioned in telling of Driver relatives was a Grandma Shoop, who was such an immaculate housekeeper that she kept the long board walk to the outside toilet scrubbed as much as the kitchen floor... Mom always called her Grandma Shoop. The 2 May 1901 issue of the Lansing Democrat ran this bit of gossip While returning from the funeral of Mrs. Roback last week Wednesday, F.H. Matthews' team ran away and threw the family from the buggy. The team ran into Sheldon Driver's carriage, throwing the occupants out. Mrs. Matthews was thrown violently against the frame, but escaped serious injury. The damage was small. ▼References
