20 Nov. 1691, York County, VA Deed: Deed from Joseph Ring & Thomas Ballard both of the County of York in Virginia gent. ___ in ___ appointed according to an ___ of aff:bly made at James City Aprill ye 16th 1691: ... for their disposal of fifty Acres of Land (be it more or less) situate lying and being in Yorke County aforesaid ippointed for a port &c. own thors? according to ___ Law of the one part and Edward Moss Junr. of the County aforesaid gent. of the other part. Witnesseth that sd. land possesses for a valuable an proportionable Consideration to them in hand paid by ye said Edward Moss the Receipt whereof they do hereby confess & acknowledge. Have given, granted, bargained, Sold, Enforced & Confirmed unto he said Edward Moss his heirs and assigns for Ever. All of one lott or half acres of Land Containing ten poles in Length and eight in breadth, Joyning or bounding upon the main street and upon sd. lotts numbered 64 & 69, this said lott being ye 65th lott is by a plott thereof under the hand of Coll Lawrence Smith? surveyor on ye Records of Yorke County.... In Witness thereof ye parties abovesaid to these present Indentures of bargain and sale their hands and seals Interchangable have putt the day & year first above written. Moss Family. - Edward Moss, "Boatwright", an early resident of York county, Va., made a gift to his son Edward in 1657, to the record of which the clerk affixes a drawing appearing to indicate armorial bearings. His wife ws Elanor, who in 1665 gave a calf to her son Edward Moss, "sonne to Edward Mosse, deceased." This son was a justice in 1687, and made his will in 1716. Issue: (1), Benjamin; (2), William; (3), John; (4), Elizabeth Tabb; (5) Ann Phillps; (6) Rebecca, wife of William Armistead. Armistead Family (Continued from Vol. VI p. 226); William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, Vol. 7, No. 1, (Jul., 1898), pp. 17-24.
William Armistead, was son of Anthony Armistead and his wife Hannah Ellyson. He resided in Elizabeth City county, and was major in the militia, high sheriff of Elizabeth City county (1693) and a justice. He was Burgess from Elizabeth City county in the assembly of 1696-1697, and in the sessions of May 13 and Jun 18 1702, Oct 25, 1710, and Nov 16, 1714. He married several times. His first wife was Hannah, born 1 Jul 1673, daughter of Thomas Hinde (or Hine) by his wife Hannah. Maj. Armistead's last wife was Rebecca, daughter of Edward Moss, J. P. of York county. Maj. Armistead's will is dated 4 Jan (year blank) and Probated Feb 17, 1715/16. Virginia Biography, pg 173.
23 Mar 1676/7; "To the Rt hon[ora]ble Sir William Berkeley, Knt., governr &c., John Baskervyle, in behalf of York County most humbly presenteth: That the said County being of large extent, but few magistrates to officiate, some being lately dead, humbly prays that Mr. William Booth, Mr. Edward Mosse & Mr. Robert Cobb may be admitted by yer Honr into the commission being reported Loyall & honeste Subjects. And he shall ever pray &c. John Baskervyle, the writer of this letter was the clerk of York County. The following answer was returned: "the 23 March 1676-7 this petition is granted and these are ordered to be sworne at the next County Court. Teste, Henry Hartwell, Cl. Con. [1]
