    Edward Mobley, Junior, son of Edward Moberley, Sr. and Susannah DeRuel, was born 25 Dec 1735 and died 17 Oct 1781. He came to South Carolina with his family and settled in northwest Fairfield County. There were four land grants in the name of Edward Moberley in this neighborhood: 50 acres, 23 Mar 1769; 100 acres 15 May 1771; 100 acres 22 Mar 1773; and 100 acres 23 June 1773. It is difficult to determine which of these were made to Edward Jr since the Petition and survey dates were sometimes five to ten years prior to the patent or grant dates shown here. The land in question fell to his eldest son, William Mobley.
    Edward Mobley, Junior (probably known as "Senior" by the time of the Rev. War) likely served in the American Revolution. There are the following references: One each to "Edward Mobberley -- Envelope 5289. 171 days service on the expedition to Orangeburg, General Sumpter's Brigade. 42 days service as Footman at Four Holes, General Henderson's Brigade. Signed 'Edward Mobberley, Jr.'"
    The other reference: "Edward Mobberley, Sr. - 90 days militia duty in 1781 & 1782 - 35 days duty done at Orangeburg, Capt. Lealls Co., Col Winn's Regiment . . . 22 days. . . 35 days done at the Forks of Edisto." Sworn to 25 Mar 1784
    No date is given with the first reference and since Edward Mobley, Jr. died in 1781-3, he could not have signed after that date. Or his record may not have been brought to light due to his early demise after the Rev. War. He would not have filed for a land grant, pension or other compensation. No affidavits or other proof of service would be forthcoming from him. His own son, Edward Mobley III was old enough for Rev. War Service. Another son, Levi, is said to have served in the War.
    An epidemic struck the family of Edward Mobley, Jr in Oct 1781, resulting in the death of Edward, his wife Drusilla Meador Mobley and their daughters Ruthea and Sarah.

    =====
    1782
    As for Edward's date of death:
    His estate is contained in Apartment 45, Package 1593 of the Old Camden District estate records of the Court of the Ordinary. His was one of a few that ended up in Sumter Co SC instead of Fairfield Co for some undetermined reason.
    Citation: Camden District order by Wood Furman Esq, Ordinary of the said district, Whereas William Mobberly applied to me for administration of all the singular, the goods & chattels, rights and credits of Edward Mobberly late of the said district deceased.....Fourteenth day of August anno dom 1782. (follows with order to any Minister of the Gospel to advertise this)
    Next are two signed returns, one from Thomas Duke that it was posted at his house and a second by James Fowler, VDM, that it was publicly read to "a considerable congregation" on Sandy River, 25 Aug 1782.
    Next is the original signed administrator's bond to William Mobberley (signed as such) with his bondsmen John Moberley (signed as such) and Henry Rogers (signed as such). Josiah Furman witness. Dated 7 Sept 1782.
    Next is the original ordinary court order to Benjamin Mobbly, Francis Coleman, Moses Hill, Robert Coleman and David Richardson to take the inventory of the estate. Dated 10 Sept 1782.
    Next is the original inventory report returned by Benjamin his BM mark Mobberley (sic), Francis Coalman (sic signed) and Robert Coleman (sic signed).
    Next are the original estate sale report sheets indicating sales to William Moberley (sic), Edward Moberley Junr, Susanna (sic) Moberley, and Henry Rogers.
    Last page is a list of the notes due to the estate and a list of the notes held against the estate.
    In the whole, this strongly indicates that Edward Mobberley Sr died in 1782 in old Camden District, SC which later became Fairfield Co, SC.
    ===
    In the estate records of son [sic] Samuel Mobley is a small report on a piece of paper that states:
    Edward Mobley Estate
    Appraisement made November 10th 1782 amount 574.12.6 (British pounds).
    Sale 20th November 1782 amount 702.9
    viz to William Mobley 154.1
    Edward Mobley Junior 191.10
    Susannah Mobley 111.10
    Henry Rogers 325.8
    (totalled) 782.9
    due to the estate 1106.0
    (totalled) 1888.9.0
    Debts & Expenses 94.3.9
    Remains 1794.5.3

    There is no other indication of why this item is in the estate package, but presumably it records a legacy that is due to Samuel as an heir to his father Edward Mobley SR's estate. Why that estate is not settled by this time (1803) may indicate that Susannah Mobley is still alive. It is not thought that she is, nor is it thought that any of the heirs are still under age 21 at this late a date. [See note re: confusion of Edward Sr. and Edward Jr. by Mobley]

    p. 24.

    Edward Mobley, served in Cherokee War under Col. Richard Richardson whose men were mainly from Camden District of Craven County

  5. Both Hill and Mobley appear to follow the DAR record for Edward's date of birth without question, although it is clearly incorrect with respect to place of birth. However, if Edward purchased land in 1750, he had to be at least 21 years of age at that time, meaning that he had to have been born by about 1729.
  6. According to Milton C. Mobley, this record is for Edward's father, Edward Mobberly. However family records show Edward's father dying in 1765, while this estate record is consistent with the reported death of his son Edward, as is the naming of his son-in-law Henry Rogers as a bondsman.
