ML [TH-IL 96] gives parents names, POB, occupation as clerk; witnesses were Earl and Marie Vollmer. SS# 707-16-1765

Served as corporal in th US Army during WW I. Service # 3071328; entered service May 29, 1918; left April 26, 1919; discharged; no other info from NPRC because of a fire that destroyed records [TH-IL 225]. Worked for more than 50 years for the Rock Island Railroad. DC reports his job as master mechanic clerk. SS# 707-16-1765. Informant on DC was wife, Edna. Ed had health problems since age 40. With the help of brothers Eddie and Boots, he built his house at 3293-13th Ave. in Rock Island; family lived there 60 years. He was a Lutheran all his life. He met Edna at Young People’s Group at the Immanuel Lutheran Church- knew Edna since high school. They married after WW I. Ed was one of four brothers. Died of brain hemmorhage-stroke. Data from Rita Mangelsdorf [TH-IL 57] and DC#80102 [TH-IL 81]. RI County did not find a BC for him on DOB.

DC [TH-IL 107; State File # 80102] reports cause of death as cerebral thrombosis as consequence of cerebral arteriosclerosis; died in Moline Public Hospital; names of parents; witness was Edna; job as master mechanic clerk for railroad; lived at 3293-13th Ave, Rock Island; served in WW I.

Obit in the Rock Island Argus, July 5, 1978, p. 5 [TH-IL 180]: “Funeral rites tomorrow for life resident Funeral services for Edward W. Mangelsdorf, 78, of 3293 13th Ave., Rock Island, who died Monday, will be held tommorow at 10 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Rock Island. The Rev. John L. Stuebe, visitation pastor, will officiate, and burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call at the Hodgson Funeral Home from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Handbell Choir. Mr. Mangelsdorf was born Aug. 23, 1899 in Rock Island, the son of Edward C. and Anna Kramer Mangelsdorf. He was a life resident. He married Edna M. Theus Sept. 26, 1922 in Rock Island. He had been employed as a master mechanic clerk for the Rock Island Lines for 47 years, retiring in September 1964. Mr. Mangelsdorf was a member of elders and at one time was chairman of the board of education. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Retirees. He was an Army veteran of World War I. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Miss Barbara Mangelsdorf, Rock Island, a son, Dr. William E. Mangeldsorf, Kingman, Ariz.; four grandchildren and a brother, Herman, Hillsdale. He was preceeded in death by two brothers.”

Ed died with a will whose probate procedure was filed July 12, 1978 [TH-IL 217]; his estate was worth $37,500 ($31,500 was his house); expenses were $3,275 including an $1800 funeral. He had $5500 in life insurance.

I, EDWARD MANGELSDORF, of the City of Rock Island, County of Rock Island and State of Illinois, do hereby Make, Publish and Declare this to by my Last Will and Testament in the manner following: FIRST I hereby nominate and appoint my wife, EDNA MANDELSDORF, Executor of this my Last Will and Testament and request that she be permitted to act as such without giving bond, and that she shall first pay all of my just debts and funeral expenses as soon after my decrease as may be practicable. SECOND All the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, both real and personal, and wheresoever the same may be situated of which I may die seized and possessed, I give, devise and bequeath unto my said wife. Edna Mangelsdorf, as her absolute property and estate in fee simple. In the event that I and my wife should die in a common disaster, or at approximately the same time, then and in such case, I hereby give, devise and bequeath unto my children, share and share alike.
