Died in France in WWII (later wave of Normandy Invasion) [Co. C, 134th Inf, 35th Div.]

Obit: "Pfc. Donald E. Fairchild, 21, U.S. Infantry, reported a few days ago as missing in action, is now reported killed in action July 16, in France. The word has been received by his wife, Mrs. Kathleen Fairchild, 2215 N. 25th Street.

         "Fairchild went overseas last April and took part in the invasion of France. He entered service in January, 1943, at which time he was employed by the Warren Paper Products Company. Born in this city, he attended Jefferson High School and was married in December 1942 to Kathleen Turner. He was a member of Tippecanoe Post 1154, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Fraternal Order of Eagles.
          "A daughter, Bernadette Louise, was born to Mrs. Fairchild July 5. Surviving are the widow and child; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Fairchild, 12 S. 30th Street, and the following brothers and sisters: Weldon H. Fairchild, Terre Haute; Mrs. Leon Reynolds and Miss Harriett Fairchild, Indianapolis; Mrs. Robert Shoaf, West Lafayette; Mrs. Robert E. Pechin, Mrs. Wellington Carpenter, Charles A. Farchild, Jr.; and Mrs. Thomas Rund, Lafayette, and Phyllis at home."

Bernadette, his daughter, said he was killed by a sniper during cleanup operations in St. Lo.
