From the January 20, 1984, edition of the Dubuque (IA) Telegraph Herald Dubuque man, 18, dies when struck by van Dean M. Scardino, 18, of 746 Peru Road in Dubuque died shortly after midnight this morning when he was struck while trying to jump-start a friend's car on Central Avenue. Scardino was pronounced dead on arrival at St. Joseph's Unit of Mercy Health Center at 12:51 am. A van driven by Mitchell K. Fretheim, 19, of Decorah, Iowa, struck Scardino. Police cited Fretheim for carelessness in failing to avoid a pedestrian and for failing to stop in an assured clear distance. Fretheim's van was southbound in the 3700 block of Central when it struck the stalled car, which was parked astride the center line. The van then struck both Scardino and the car being used to start the stalled vehicle. Scardino had been a passenger in a car driven by Mark T. Lange, 16, of 3041 Brunswick St. in Dubuque. The stalled car was operated by Jeffrey T. Wall, 16, of 4641 Cinnamon Road in Dubuque. From the January 22, 1984, edition of the Dubuque (IA) Telegraph Herald Dean M. Scardino Services for Dean M. Scardino, 18, of 746 Peru Road, will be at 10 am Monday at Holy Ghost Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemtery. Friends may call from 2-9 pm Sunday at Behr's, where the parish wake service will be at 5 pm Sunday. Dean, who was born in Dubuque, died at 12:51 am Friday at St. Joseph's Unit of Mercy Health Center. He attended Hempstead High School, where he was active in Junior Achievement. He worked at Potter Auto Sales and Services and Morett 76 Service Station. Surviving are his parents, Vincent J. and Shirley M. (Barrett) Scardino; two sisters, Mrs. Ron (Vicki) Hansen of East Dubuque and Janice Meyer of Dubuque; three brothers, Chuck A., Ron V. and Randy J., all of Dubuque, and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Della barrett of Dubuque. |
