David Evan Timothy was born on 1st February 1824 and baptised just over a year later in the parish of St George the Martyr in Southwark, Surrey, in the southern suburbs of London. He was the son of Jane Timothy, formerly Cassanet, and her husband David Timothy, a feather and bedding merchant. When David was still very small, before his sister was born in 1826, the family moved across the river into the City of London, living on the street called Barbican. David appears there in the 1841 census living with his parents and siblings.
David became a wharfinger (harbourmaster), and appears to have travelled to Australia several times. He has not been found in the 1851 census in England, but in October 1853 he was recorded in the Melbourne area of Victoria, and was said to have been in Australia for a year. His younger brother Peter was also out in Australia at that time. In February 1854 David sailed back from Melbourne to Liverpool on the ship Marco Polo. David was clearly quite successful in his business, as he was able to afford to travel back in the first class cabin, and described himself as a gentleman.
David ran a wharfinger and lightermen's business for a time with his brother Augustus, based at Mesnard's Wharf at Shad Thames on the south bank of the Thames. They dissolved that business in 1855. David then went into business with a man called William John Shotter, forming a company called Timothy, Shotter & Co., which was based at Mellish's Wharf in the Milwall area on the Thames east of the city. That business was dissolved in 1862.
David's mother died in 1863 in Peckham.
On 20th April 1865, aged 41, David married Sophia Ingall at St Mary's Church in Hornsey, Middlesex. She was about twelve years his junior. They do not appear to have had any children.
David's father died in 1868 in Shoreditch. Shortly afterwards there were a number of court cases involving David, his siblings and their father's creditors, presumably as a result of trying to settle their father's estate.
The 1871 census finds David and Sophia and a servant living at 16 Ladbroke Grove Road in Kensington. David described himself as a retired wharfinger at this time.
David has not been found the the 1881 census; it is entirely possible that he was abroad. Sophia was visiting her siblings on census night.
By 1893 David and Sophia had moved to Australia, living at Blair House, 207 Glebe Point Road in Sydney. David died there on 27th October 1893, aged 69. Sophia survived him by nearly three years.
