Felix Festus Timothy was born on 30th November 1843 and baptised the following month in the parish of St Giles without Cripplegate in the City of London. He was the son of Jane Timothy, formerly Cassanet, and her husband David Timothy, a feather and bedding merchant. The family lived on the street called Barbican in the city.
In September 1860, when Felix was still only sixteen years old, banns of marriage were read at St Saviour's in Southwark for him and a Jane Hamblin. She had given birth to a boy earlier that year, whom Felix later acknowledged to be his son. For whatever reason, Felix and Jane did not marry in 1860. The 1861 census finds Felix living with his parents, brother and a servant at 5 York Grove in the Peckham area of Camberwell in the southern suburbs of London, whilst Jane was living with her mother and the baby in the village of Hampton. Felix was described as a clerk to a corn broker at the time.
Felix's mother died on 3rd March 1863. Later that same month, on 29th March 1863, Felix and Jane finally did marry, at Barnes in Surrey. They went on to have another eight children between 1863 and 1882.
Felix worked as a commercial traveller, and appears to have been regularly away from home. He is recorded as sailing from Liverpool to Quebec in June 1866, for what appears to have been a short trip, although his return journey has not been found.
Felix's father died in 1868 in Shoreditch. Under his father's will, Felix and his siblings took equal shares of the estate, but Felix's share (and that of his brother William) was deferred for seven years after his father's death. It is not clear why his father thought it appropriate to make Felix wait for his share. Litigation followed, with Felix suing all his brothers and sisters that year.
In August 1869, Felix, Jane, and their children sailed from Liverpool to Quebec. They spent some time living in Canada, with one of their daughters being born in Peterborough County, Ontario in October 1869. Felix described himself as a farmer at this time. However, by 1871 they had returned to England, and appear in the census in West Ham, east of London.
In 1881 Jane and the children were living in the Peckham area south of London, although Felix was away from home on census night. By 1891 Jane and the children were living at South Norwood in Croydon, and again, Felix was away from home on census night.
Jane died on 29th November 1900 at Regency Square in Brighton, right on the seafront. She was 62 years old. A newspaper announcement of her death described her as "the dearly beloved wife of Felix F. Timothy, of Portland-mansions, 120, Great Portland-street, London".
The 1901 census finds Felix (listed as Frederick, although whether this is an error or how he was actually known is not clear), along with his two youngest daughters living at 120 Great Portland Street in the Marylebone area of London. Felix described himself as a traveller, whilst his daughter Miriam was a professional singer. They also had a servant living with them.
Felix later moved to 50 King Henry's Road in the Primrose Hill area of Hampstead in north London. He died on 8th January 1910, aged 66.
